About Aliso Viejo Aliso Viejo is only a little more than 10 square miles. But don't let the size fool you, this little city has roughly 40,000 residents. Aliso Viejo has a total of 21 parks, offering families everything from picnics, playing or a brisk walk. Some of the parks have access to south Orange County’s trail system for a hike or bike ride.
Aliso Viejo became Orange County's 34th city after an incorporation vote was overwhelmingly passed by 93%. The new City of Aliso Viejo assumed its duties on July 1, 2001. As a general law city, the City of Aliso Viejo develops policies and procedures in accordance with California State law. Aliso Viejo contracts for many of its services including police, fire, legal, public works, engineering, code enforcement, building & safety, street maintenance, and street sweeping. Additional city-contracted services include animal care, and trash pick up.
Library services are provided by the Orange County Library System. Landscape maintenance of most slopes, medians, and parks are administered by AVCA, with the exception of Iglesia Park, which is City-owned. Both AVCA and the City share in the responsibility of providing recreational programs, special events and activities to the community.
Approximately 4,000 acres of wilderness and natural open space land. Originally, part of the Juaneno or Acajchemem tribal land, it later was owned by Don Juan Avila, Louis Moulton, The Mission Viejo Company and now is under the jurisdiction of Harbors, Beaches, and Parks Department. Within the park lands are mature oaks, sycamores, and elderberry trees, two year round streams and over 30 miles of official trails. Many rare and endangered plants and animals make this park their home. This park is designated as a wildlife sanctuary. Some information provided by the City of Aliso Viejo Beaches and Parks
