About Buena Park...
Dubbed “The Center of the Southland,” Buena Park played a crucial role in establishing inland Orange County as much more than a fertile farming region. That’s not to say that agriculture didn’t play a huge role in the city’s development. Indeed, when the territory of Buena Park was founded in 1887, it made its mark as an essential hub for growing and exporting dairy, citrus, and berries. One of the farmers that cultivated the land was Walter Knott, whose enthusiasm for a new hybrid fruit called the boysenberry combined with the selling of wife Cordelia’s popular chicken dinners and the meticulous re-creation of an old West “ghost town” to transform his humble little roadside stand along State Highway 39 into Knott’s Berry Farm. The country’s oldest theme park, Knott’s was the impetus for the city to grow into a premier destination for family entertainment that pre-dated Disneyland’s arrival by more than a decade. Since the city’s official incorporation in 1953, several attractions have populated the area around Knott’s to vie for many a tourist’s dollar, including The Alligator Farm, and Movieland Wax Museum.
While the Knott’s Berry Farm of today is markedly different from what the park once was, several elements of its past have been preserved as a tribute to Buena Park’s days of yore. The original berry stand is still in the park, the ghost town buildings still remain, and hungry patrons can still chow down on Mrs. Knott’s famous chicken dinners. Knott’s influence is still strong enough to make Buena Park one of the OC’s top cities for family fun: Entertaining destinations such as Knott’s Soak City water park, Medieval Times, and the Pirate Dinner Adventure provide terrific options for locals and visitors alike to get out and have some fun. And Buena Park’s centralized location makes it possible to live up to its city slogan; just 21 miles away from Los Angeles, its land bisected by the 5 freeway and Beach Boulevard (the old State Highway 39), several leading Southland attractions can be easily accessed from the city, including the Los Alamitos Race Course, Angel Stadium, the Honda Center, several of Orange County’s beach communities, and (of course) Disneyland.
