About Newport Beach
About Newport Beach Newport Beach offers nine miles of amazing beaches, with an eclectic mix of yuppy, artsy and ultra trendy Southern Californians. Living in Newport will cost you, with the average house costing well over a million dollars. Visiting Newport Beach is a must for anyone vacationing in Orange County, with so many awesome things to do and see. Paving the way for shopping enthusiast with its ultra sleek Fashion Island and many other upscale shopping options, film festivals, food and wine tastings, legendary boat parades, luxurious spas, countless performing arts venues, museums, golf courses and top notch dining.
Newport Beach was named by Captain S.S. Dunnells who discovered it in 1870. The city was incorporated 36 years later. It quickly became known as a "second Hollywood" with attractions that drew legends such as the late Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne. The history behind Newport stretches even further back in time: because of its water channels and marsh, it is believed that Native Americans settled in the area long ago. Archaeologists have discovered Native American artifacts that date back 9,000 years. Since those early days, Newport has expanded into 36.05 square miles with a 752-acre bay - the largest open water estuary in Southern California. And there about 76,700 residents who are proud to call this home. The main attraction - the beach - draws in both sunbathers and surfers alike. Others bodyboard, sail, snorkel, kayak and even more along this little slice of the Pacific Coast.
Newport Beach also offers the local communities of the Balboa Island and the Peninsula. Although known for being the first to market the chocolate-covered banana, Balboa is worthy of recognition in many other areas. Historical ferries transport people to and from the Balboa Peninsula, which features more shops and eateries, while homes are congregated on the island. There are also a slew of shops and eateries geared towards mostly tourists along Marine Avenue.
