One of the finest and most scenic small boat harbors in the world winds its way back to Newport Dunes, a favorite gathering place for water-oriented family fun. A calm water beach is great for sunbathing and swimming with the kids. More active aquatic adventures include sail boarding, boating and fishing. The harbor features boat slips for every type of recreational craft, from rowboats to yachts. RV camping is available at the Dunes. Don’t miss the harbor’s special events such as the Ensenada Race, the Christmas Boat Parade and a continuum of regattas.

Sunset Beach provides ample space for recreational activities. Traditional water related activities such as swimming, and body and board surfing are common. A surfing zone is provided and controlled by the “black ball” flag system. Lifeguard service is provided. Food and beach supplies are available at many nearby stores, restaurants and food stands.

Bordering Newport Back Bay, the Nature Preserve provides vistas of the coastal wetlands, which are reminiscent of the historic landscape of much of Alta California. Renowned as one of the finest birding sites in North America, several endangered species make this natural preserve their home. The Muth Interpretive Center overlooks the shimmering estuary, offering the visitor a portage to bay life.

Park Info: Irvine Regional park is surrounded by Oak and Sycamore trees. Barbeques and tables are throughout entire park. With parking and restrooms nearby. A paved bicycle and walking trail goes through the central park making it easily accessable to six playgrounds, four softball fields, two horse shoe pits, volleyball courts and lagoon. Sycamore Hill group area is the newest reservable private picnic area. Requests for this area should contact the Irvine Park Railroad at (714)997-3968.


Concessions: Bicycle and aquacycle rentals are located adjacent to the historic boathouse. Rentals are available throughout the summer, weekends and holidays. Children's pony rides: are provided 11am to 5pm, weekends and holidays. During summer vacation, the rides are open everyday, except Monday.

Description: Carbon Canyon Regional Park consists of 124 acres. Sixty are developed and of the remaining acreage, a ten acre grove of Coastal Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) has been established. Throughout the developed park are Pepper trees, Sycamores, Eucalyptus and Pines.

Description: A stately grove of mature Cottonwood and Sycamore trees and the Santa Ana River create the setting for the beautiful Featherly Regional Park. Among the park's other assets is a natural riparian wilderness area, wide open spaces, planted turf areas and a wide variety of ornamental trees. The Santa Ana River flows through the park, encouraging a variety of plant and animal life.

Description: Heritage Hill Historical Park is composed of 4.1 acres, four historic buildings and associated structures for maintenance and public restrooms. The fully restored and furnished historic buildings span the early history of the Saddleback Valley and El Toro area from the Mexican Rancho era (Serrano Adobe, circa 1863), to the founding of the town of El Toro (El Toro Grammar School, 1890; St. George's Episcopal Mission, 1891), through the citrus farming days of the early twentieth century (Harvey Bennett Ranch House, 1908).

Guided tours through the buildings are provided for the public Wednesday through Sunday. The tours offer an interpretation of Saddleback area history through the artifacts, events and people associated with each building. Landscaping of the park is in keeping with the historic nature of the buildings. The grounds are also available for weddings. Park staff and associated community interest groups offer special events each year, the most popular of which is the annual Victorian Christmas held on the first Saturday of December.
